Bulletin, 15 January 2019
by Wendy Townsend
Our meeting was held at the Oak Bay Rec Centre and we had a good turn out and a lovely Roast Beef lunch. President Peter welcomed everyone and asked for a volunteer to help us start singing O Canada. Neil Rawnsley did the invocation, reminding us with everything going on in the world we are truly blessed to be here in Victoria and being able to give back.
Jason Ko introduced the visitors:
We had 3 visiting Rotarians:
Janet Power –Victoria Club
Jerry Davis- Nanaimo Oceanside (he really wants to experience the Oak Bay Beach Hotel lunch so will be back!)
Tom Kofin- Edmonton South (Tom has been a regular as he and his wife have been wintering here)
Speakers, Marko Peljhan with Island Health, Avery Brohman & Alec McKay, both of Victoria Hospitals Foundation
Robert (Bob) Beauvais, a returning Rotarian who became a member at this meeting – welcome back Bob!!
Joan Peggs announced the time for the dinner and white Elephant auction at “ The Sol” on February 26th is at 6pm. Mark your calendars as it is going to be fun. She also held up a sample auction item, a chair with a skull painted on the seat. I do believe this was donated by Nils Jensen, thank you Nils for starting us off!
President Peter then asked for 2 volunteers per month to distribute food at Craigflower school. Chris & I did this and it was fun. The food is in boxes upon arrival which we have to set up onto tables. Once school is dismissed parents and children come and pick up any food that they might need. A very worthy cause and fun to be around that young energy!
Peter asked me to get up and talk about our experience which I felt I did not do a good job of, hence my description of our experience.
Joan Firkins & Lorna Curtis then inducted our newest member Bob Beauvais, welcome Bob! Joan did a lovely welcome and introduction, thank you Joan! Lorna pinned Bob with his new Rotary pin and then the club members went and shook hands and welcomed Bob.
Vicky Pitt was our celebrations master and had some good ones! If you were going away somewhere warm this winter, pay a $. If you sped or did a California stop or any other driving infraction pay a $.

50/50- Lorna Curtis won last week and the marbles were not there to draw so she drew this week and no luck. Sandy won the 50/50 of $12.00, drew a marble, no go as well. Pot is now over $100! Buy your tickets!!
Perry introduced the speaker Marko Pejhan from Island Health. Avery and Alec from Victoria Hospitals Foundation were there but did not speak. President Peter then presented Marko with a cheque from Rotary for $3500. Marko delivered a very interesting presentation on what Island Health does, provided us with many interesting statistics and explained how they worked with the Victoria Hospitals Foundation to determine the priority re what equipment was needed. Marko also announced that Rotary has donated $9,500 to the Foundation to date, along with an ECG machine in 2018 and an auto blood pressure machine in March of 2016. An extremely interesting and engaging talk!
Eugen thanked Marko and relayed his experience with the hospital when he was hospitalized for his pancreatis attack and the wonderful care that he had.
President Peter than asked for four volunteers to read the 4 way test, (a good reminder) and then the meeting was adjourned.
