Rotary Club of Oak Bay
Bulletin, 11 February, 2020
By Chris Kershaw

President Joan welcomed us to meeting number 22 in our 46th year, reminding us that this month’s Rotary theme is “Peace Building and Conflict Prevention” and all the work Rotary is doing to promote peace. This was followed by “O Canada”.
We welcomed our guests, who were Cheryl Nelson (Jasper Rotary). Tom Kofin (Edmonton South Rotary) and Lawrence Lewis who plans to become a member soon. Doris Lewis gave the invocation.
Kim Barnard presented information on Youth protection training starting with the link on the Rotary District 5020 website that gives youth protection information at:

Kim stressed the purpose of the training to build awareness so we can all take responsibility for building a culture of safety, understand Rotary’s policies and expectations and be able to employ strategies for Youth Protection affirmative actions. Kim explained how clicking on the certification link on the information page allows each member to receive a link via email to access the information required to achieve certification. Each member needs set aside some time to carefully read the information and undertake the evaluation.

There was further presentation on the content of the training and some interactive discussion of scenarios and some final questions. President Joan urged everyone to get online while this was still fresh in the mind. Kim also said she could be rated via an email to Marnee Obendorf (marneespsrotary@comcast.net) using a scanned copy of the form that was handed out to everyone.
Alyx Valdal then was our entertaining celebrations master.
Ali Edgell was pleased to accept a large number of bottles of wine for the upcoming EREY Wine draw, along with payments for the associated $35 raffle tickets. Ali will be collecting more in the run up to the draw on 10 March. The aim is for every member to contribute wine and the $35 for the EREY (Every Year, Every Rotarian) target.

President Joan concluded the meeting thanking Linda and staff at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre who did a great job with the room and catering and also thanked Doris for the chocolates donated on each table. The meeting on 18 February will be a club day and will be back at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel.
