Rotary Club of Oak Bay
Bulletin 12 May, 2020
by Heather Aked

President Joan conducted another successful zoom meeting. Rumor has it we’ll be doing these through to the end of June, quite possibly longer.
We opened the meeting with O’Canada by the Wiggles and the invocation, a lovely poem, was read by Adam.

President Joan introduced out visiting guests including RI Director Johrita Solari from the Rotary Club of Anaheim.  Johrita spoke to us about change, adapting to change and to looking for opportunities during times of change.

Announcements:
Joan informed us that our Club has qualified for the Presidential Citation – congrats to all.
The District Leadership Training Assembly takes place this Saturday. 11 members from our Club have signed up for the zoom sessions and 813 people have signed up altogether.  This is an unprecedented high attendance and going forward I believe this will be the way that we will conduct these meetings.  There’s even a happy hour at the end of the day!

Will Carter, our Celebrations Master, encouraged us to make a minimum $5 contribution to the ‘fines’ fund. We have contributed over $1,100 through April to the Rapid Relief fund. From here on contributions are going back into our club coffers to be used for the annual Rotary auction.
Will also noted that Dr. Bonnie Henry made it into McLean’s magazine, an article we’ll find interesting.
Birthdays:  Neil, Clair and Eugen.  Anniversaries:  Jack & Brannon, Vicky & Tim and Wolf & Elise.

Joan also virtually awarded Pablo and Wendy with Paul Harris pins. Thanks to both of them for their contributions which make our world a better place. As soon as we meet in person, you will receive the physical pins!

Our speaker, Dr. Rachael Lovink is a Naturopathic doctor specializing in digestive health.
She gave an extremely interesting talk on digestive health.  Very briefly Rachael noted that:
  • The digestive track plays a key role.
  • Impacts our health and our immunity.
  • Toxicity influences its ability to do its job.
  • Chronic stress is related to our digestive well-being.
  • COVID 19 – there’s a big connection between our ability to fend off disease and digestive health. There are no specific treatments for Covid 19 at this time. A healthy digestive tract can help.
Rachael practices out of Geometry Integrated Health on Broughton street Victoria.
After numerous follow-up questions, Ron thanked Rachael for her informative talk.

Joan closed the meeting with a fun/touching video link (provided by yours truly) – an interview for the director of operations aka MOM.

See you next week!
